If you could name any feature about the Cool Fire IV Plus you thought was missing, what would it be? Would you like to see a different shape? What about a named chipset?

Perhaps 70 watts of output is not high enough or the design needs something new to really grab your attention. Take a look at Innokin’s latest vape mod, the Cortex.

Named for the Brain

Neurologically, the cortex is your brain’s command center, controlling your body and thought processes. To name their new mod after this high-functioning part of the brain says something about Innokin’s confidence in the Cortex. They want you to know how intelligent their technology has become, thanks to an iKarno control chip. This is the brain of their mod’s operation and here is what it can do.

Smart iKarno Chipset

Select a value from wattage between 6 and 80 watts in VW mode. Alternatively, change from variable wattage to temperature control (TC). Now pick a number between 150C and 315C (300F to 600F), adjusting by 5º at a time, and settle in for regulated vaping. Innokin promises even coil heating from their iKarno chip and a 3300-mAh battery with 2A charging capability. The result should be even, consistent flavor for vapers. They also indicate that heat generation is very low for excellent efficiency and what you have is a box that isn’t going to burn your hand.

Although vaping at high watts and high temperature is generally expensive, using a lot of power and e juice compared with a less powerful APV, Innokin gives some of that power back with their intelligent system. There is even a low-powered standby mode. TC vaping typically reduces costs for users at this level but Innokin seems to be saying they’ve gone one better.

The chip also detects dry hits before they happen. Has a pleasurable vaping experience ever been spoiled by that last few hits when the atomizer coil needed to be replaced? The iKarno won’t let that happen, determining not just resistance but loss of performance due to the end of a coil’s life. That’s more likely to happen using regular coils, not the high-end Nickel or Titanium sorts need to operate your mod in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Colorful and Ergonomic

Innokin cornered the market on rounded, soft edges with their Cool Fire IV Plus. The top-right corner slopes off to join the flat control panel opposite a soft, ergonomic palm-side. The iTaste MVP is very boxy and heavy by comparison with the Cool Fire Plus.

The new Innokin Cortex is a little sharper — just like smart people overall — but still easy to hold. In a way you might say it’s a combination of the MVP and Cool Fire: lighter like a CF IV but more in keeping with the MVP shape. Innokin makes their new mod in four colors: red, blue, silver, and black.

Each one is shiny, metallic, and sophisticated like an MVP, only more so.

Essential Controls

Buttons and display are all located along one side. This doesn’t go without saying in the age of vape mods. Manufacturers look for subtle ways to vary appearances like placing one button on the front or putting the screen there. They choose assorted button shapes like rectangles, squares, and arrows or replace buttons for changing wattage with a dial.

Innokin keeps their design really simple with a small but bright display and regular buttons all situated together and no dials. This is a lovely little unit worth considering, especially if you have already experienced Innokin’s high-quality designs before. Time will tell if the Cortex truly becomes the brains of their sub-ohm operation.

Alternatives from Innokin

If you can’t find a Cortex or you appreciate a softer shape, the Innokin Cool Fire IV Plus supplies 70 watts, 0.1-ohm capabilities, and its predecessor will supply output up to 60 watts. Buy the CF IV Plus as a kit with the Apex tank from participating dealers and save money on high-quality vaping equipment including organic cotton coils and a loaded tank set.
