Is a vape pen an e cig or an herbal vaporizer? Is it a “bong” as some people call it — a device for smoking illegal substance? What do you picture when someone says “vape pen?”
A number of devices were designed for multiple use, so you are not limited as to the picture you have in your mind. The vape pen is a battery and it fits with lots of different chambers, each of which holds a different substance (liquid, wax, or dry herbs). If you were giving one as a gift, you could choose one specifically designed to act as an alternative nicotine delivery system.
What is a Vape Pen?
Is the pen your battery or the whole device including a chamber? That depends on the pen in question.
A VV4 by Innokin is a geometrically interesting battery to which you would add a chamber or tank. People use it for all kinds of materials because there are variable settings on the VV4. An Orbit by Vaporfi is an herbal vaporizer pen, all-in-one, with the chamber built in.
The fundamental aspect to a vape pen is its shape: pen-like. Forget about e cigs that resemble cigarettes and imagine something longer and wider. This could be a felt pen, ballpoint pen, Sharpie, highlighter, or a cigar even.
It is usually cylindrical or at least elliptical but not typically a box (like a variable watt box mod). Many portable vaporizers resemble ordinary objects like walkie-talkies (the Crafty and Mighty by Storz and Bickel, for example), inhalers (the Puffit X), and cell phones (the Firefly). When we talk about vape pens, we are referring to a portable, wireless device with a rechargeable battery and a pen-like shape, roughly speaking.
Usually, the heating method is conduction: heat is applied directly to materials. For convection heating, you might want to buy a more expensive, larger portable vaporizer. Pen vapes tend to measure no more than 6 inches, are light, and cost around $100 or less. Reviews by real customers identify which pens are prone to overheating and causing herbs to burn. What you want is a quality item producing only vapor, not smoke.
About All-in-One Vape Pens
The Orbit is of a class of vape pens like the Phantom which incorporates all parts of the vaporizer in one unit. That is the battery, heating element, chamber for materials, vapor pathway, and mouthpiece. Usually the mouthpiece is removable and sometimes you find controls or the chamber underneath this part of the vaporizer. A starter kit for this type of device comes with screens for keeping herbs out of the atomizer, cleaning tools, and mouthpiece replacements or covers.
With the PAX 2, you open the bottom by releasing a powerful magnet and herbs are added or removed from this direction. The Orbit, however, is top-loading which is more common. The PAX 2 holds about half a gram of herbs and vaporizes them efficiently.
You can’t insert anything else: not wax or liquids, for example. It offers 4 heat settings and an “x” on one side lights up a certain color to show you how the battery or temperature are faring. It’s even got an automatic cool-down function so the device does not overheat when not in use.
Grenco Science makes several pen batteries and kits which are compatible with specific materials but the chambers are interchangeable. Their G-Pro, however, is an all-in-one unit.
Two Excellent Three-in-One Vape Pens
Pens like the Kandypens Skycloud and V2 Pro Series are used for vaping all types of materials. The bottom portion is a battery which connects to proprietary chambers, each one designed to handle a certain heat level and liquid, dry herbs, or wax.
The Pro Series 3 makes adaptations to temperature automatically when the base reads the code from a connecting chamber (which, by the way, connects magnetically for zero wear and tear). The console makes it seem as though both parts are actually just one long pen. You slot the chamber inside this console to protect the connection and also create uniformity. With a Pro Series 7, the user chooses a desired temperature. V2 even sells e liquid, but not herbs or wax, to go with your product.
The Kandypens Skycloud is one of the most elegant and attractive pens around besides being a multi-purpose device. Many top-ten review sites feature this pen in one of their top places. It is available in many colors (gold, silver, pink, yellow, green, etc.) and resembles a stick of lipstick. Both products are sold online: Skycloud through general vaporizer vendors online and on the high street and the Pro Series directly from V2 online.
One of the most well-known and well-loved e cig pens is the EVOD by Kanger. While it is not difficult to use and is often adopted as the very first pen a vaper uses when he quits smoking, this 650-mAh battery is still powerful.
Vapers liken it to a cigar in size and shape but there are loads of colors to choose from so it does not have to look like one. The EVOD is powered by a single button, is available in larger sizes, and there is even a variable voltage version.
The EVOD inspired look-alikes such as the Pro by Vaporfi. This is not exactly the same but very similar with its flush button and 650 mAh power profile.
The matching chamber holds only e juice and is covered almost entirely except for a slender window through which you see your e juice dwindling. The VaporFi Pro Series starter kit is among the most popular kits around and available in several colors. Their e juice is very high-quality, American-made stuff too.
The Apollo VTube and Volcano LavaTube are two bigger vape pens with variable wattage options. They adopt the cylindrical shape many people are comfortable with but use a screen to follow their wattage, voltage, and battery power. The highest setting for either one is 50 watts: pretty impressive for two companies that once specialized in mini cigs. They also carry American-made vapor juice.
